Colours & patterns

A field guide to colour

Betta colour lives in four layers of pigment and iridescence. Breeders stack and subtract those layers to create the named patterns below.

Colour you can't quite paint
A betta's colour is built from stacked pigment cells and light-scattering iridocytes — structural blues and greens that shift with the angle you catch them in.
Care & keeping

Betta care, done right

Forget the cup and the vase. A healthy betta wants warmth, clean cycled water and space. Here's the honest baseline every keeper should hit.

Golden rule
You are not keeping a fish — you are keeping a body of water. Get the water right and the fish takes care of itself.
Arowana lovers

The living dragon

Bony-tongued, surface-cruising and steeped in feng-shui symbolism — the arowana is the tank monarch that betta keepers graduate to.

Aim for 1,000+ litres per adult koi, strong biological filtration and a bird net. Stable water grows the colour and the fish.

About

A community of finned obsessions

Indian Betta started as a WhatsApp group of a dozen breeders swapping photos of bubble nests. Today it's a home for thousands of keepers who believe fishkeeping is equal parts science, patience and pure delight.

We're here for the beginner cycling their first 5-gallon, the breeder chasing a perfect koi galaxy line, and the arowana and koi keepers who wandered in and never left.
